Basic Computer Classes Spring 2016

An entry level approach with four courses on using a computer and accessing the internet.

LCN is continuing its basic computer learning series with the following courses:

  • Introduction to the Computer*
  • Internet and Accessing the World Wide Web
  • Email and Photo Management
  • Office Documents Word Processing

*The "Introduction to the Computer" course is a pre-requisite for the other courses offered.


Each course is 3-hours in duration, with breaks. Computers & materials supplied. Class size is limited. Please book early to avoid being placed on a waiting list.

Pay only for the course(s) you want to take, or purchase the entire program and save. LCN now provides – pay as you learn course fees so you can learn what you want, when you want.

Flexibility in course dates & times. Take any course when it is convenient to you. Want to skip a week or two? You can attend any scheduled course in the future, provided that space is available. Those paying for the entire program will receive priority placement. Advanced reservation is recommended.

LCN-BC100 – Introduction to the Personal Computer

(NB pre-requisite for all other courses)

Providing an introduction to a computer and Microsoft Windows.

Duration: 3 hours

This class offers:

  • Familiarity with a personal computer – parts/plug-ins and accessories.
  • An introduction to Microsoft Windows and basic computer programs.
  • File and folder management and managing screen views.
  • Safety, ergonomics and general awareness of icons and alerts.
  • Right-click secrets and how to turn off the computer.

LCN-BC102 – Internet and Accessing the World Wide Web

Learn how to get online and access the internet for research, information and shopping.

Duration: 3 hours

This class offers:

  • A brief history of the internet and how it works.
  • An introduction to web-browsers and how to access the internet.
  • Internet search, search results and internet advertising.
  • Saving images and completing online forms.
  • Internet content, privacy, personal privacy and tips to surf the web safely.
  • How to personalize your web experience and protect your personal information.

LCN-BC104 – Email and Photo Management

A course demonstrating how to send & receive emails and access attached files.

Duration: 3 hours

This class offers:

  • An introduction to web-based email accounts. (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.)
  • How to create and send new emails, reply, “CC” and delete emails.
  • Ways to organize the contacts (addresses) and manage your email inbox.
  • A brief overview of Microsoft Outlook.
  • Introduction to saving photos and images from the web and other devices.
  • Methods to upload, attach, view and move files (attachments).

LCN-BC106 – Office Documents Word Processing

A course designed to teach the user how to open/create, edit and save word documents, along with a brief review of spreadsheets.

Duration: 3 hours

This class offers:

  • An introduction to working with word documents (MS Office, Google Docs)
  • Opportunities to open, edit and create new documents.
  • Editing, modify, saving and printing word documents.
  • Importing an image into a word document.

FACEBOOK and SOCIAL MEDIA … IN LESS THAN A WEEK

Lethbridge Community Network’s new course: Facebook & Social Media (Twitter & Pinterest).

Duration: 9 hours (three, 3-hour sessions over three days) Cost: $75

This course covers:

Facebook

  • Set up a Facebook account and build your own Facebook page.
  • Understand online etiquette and personal safety awareness.
  • Learn how to post updates, find friends, share stories, post pictures and comments with family, friends and others who share a common interest.
  • Play the never-ending list of games available within this online community and become a part of these social media phenomena.

Twitter

  • Explore Twitter as a way to share brief comments/information.
  • Create a Twitter account.
  • Learn to post “tweets” and find people to follow in this social media platform.

Pinterest

  • Receive an intro to Pinterest – a social community that is “all the rage” with its pin board-style photo sharing website.

N.B. Students must have a working knowledge (familiarity) of a computer and the internet for the Facebook and Social Media course. Computers are provided. Personal computers can be used.

LCN's mandate is to provide public access to computers and information. To achieve its mandate, in light of limited government funding, LCN provides IT network and computer support services to not for profits.

Network and Computer Maintenance

LCN offers technical support by trained professionals to ensure your organization stays connected. Computer technicians visit your office to diagnose, troubleshoot and remedy your computers issues. Don't let outdated work stations slow your organization down, protect your office systems from unexpected downtime with regular scheduled maintenance. Maintenance programs available on a monthly basis (hours/month) and are performed during the month. Emergency Requests, next half/day response time.

Information Management & Database solutions.

LCN offers solutions to manage data, info and forms. Small to custom enterprise projects are all available services. Customized based on client need and desired solution/project. Backup/restore/access/ troubleshoot.
Remote backup (monthly fee of $45) plus a one-time $125 installation fee
Create a database to capture and extract helpful information from clients
Database solutions include MS-SQL and MySQL platforms

Computer Repair

Bring your computer in or have us come to you. Solve all your business and personal computer needs with the help of a certified LCN computer technician. We will get your computer up and running as quickly as possible to minimize down-time.
Core Services Provided Include:
On-site support-ideal repair solutions for those without the need of an IT specialist. Single or small workstations. Save valuable time, on-site support will come to you and fix your computer(s)
Full system diagnostic tests- find out why your desktop or laptop computer is running slower than normal (includes cleaning) starting at $35 and receive $15 of your second hour of any service.
